PTSD Brain Wax Écorché
Project type
Traditional- Wax Sculpture
For this project, I wanted to focus on the brain as my main extra feature. I have always though neuro-imaging looks like art, so I wanted to use the bright colors in my own piece. I chose to do a quarter cutout of the brain so I could show functionality deeper in the brain.
The neurological condition I focused on was PTSD. I did research on various university lab websites and found some scans I could use and where approximate hypo/hyperactivity took place. It is worth noting that all brains function differently and respond to trauma differently, so any representations are an average of existing data.
In addition to the facial muscles, I focused on the brain, vertebrae, cartilage of the nose & trachea, as well as nerves created using wire which makes a dynamic contrast with the wax.
The wax model is painted using oil paints. The warmer colors are representative of overactivity in those areas of the brain, while the cooler colors are representative of underactivity.
