ABOUT ME

Why Medical Art?

When I stepped in to my academic counselor's office the freshman year of my bachelor's degree, my advisor called me a unicorn. He had never before had a student with a love of the hard sciences wanting to pursue cognitive science with a creative streak driving them to want an additional secondary degree in art. Scientific Illustration is a beautiful blend of my two loves. I love science, research, and the idea of helping people, while having a deep love and talent for being creative and artistic.

Medical art backs my values of creating a more accessible science/medical industry. I am a visual person and find diagrams, models, animations, and drawings to help my personal understanding so much; I want to help people who feel the same way whether be it in a research capacity or medical treatment. I also believe sometimes medical understanding is hidden behind a wall of scientific jargon, making it hard for information to be conveyed to individuals unfamiliar, and there is a need for that more easily graspable approach.

My love of the brain

The brain has always interested me in its function and dysfunction. Neurological syndromes intrigue me especially, as the ways the body reacts to brain malfunctions can often help us know where to look for answers. I've been an artist from the moment I left the womb and no matter what positions I find myself in I always find ways to incorporate something artist. I have done artistic work on the side for past employers but would love to do this in a more main professional capacity. While I was working as an MRI operator and preprocessing EEG data, all I could see was the beauty in the images and wanting to replicate them or create an artistic manipulation. I also found myself wondering how 3D modeling, animation, and different imaging systems could help people understand what was happening to themself or loved ones while going through different neurological/psychological diagnoses. This more creative and artistic field is where I will thrive due to my innate talent and passion.

Set on the future

I hope to help make new discoveries and strides in medical art. I combine various media in my work, and I would love to explore fostering scientific understanding through a wide range of forms such as metal working, cross stitching, laser cutting, 3D printing, digital art, and animation. In the future, I would be interested in working in positions at research universities/institutions, museums, zoos, or even publishing companies. I want to use medical art to create not only engaging projects but also approachable information to the general public.
