Nickel, copper, and brass
My brain brooch is constructed from layers of nickel, copper, and brass. It features many moving elements and needs to be physically moved and flipped to be able to see all the hidden features. I created a dynamic complex piece implementing contrasting textures and finishes.
The layer revealed to the audience is a brain with negative cut outs forming the wrinkles of the brain. The polished finish allows the negative space to be highly contrasted and focuses the viewer on the surface only. The brain hemispheres open like butterfly wings to reveal a neuron, the building block of the brain, etched into a patina-ed bronze with a bit of hammering. This neuron is curled in a S shape to create movement as well as partially reveal the layer beneath. The neuron can then slide away to reveal its copper background- an etched, patina-ed heart, representing that although the brain accounts for our existence, behaviors, and feelings, there is still something unexplainable in any other way but through the heart. If the viewer then takes the brooch, flips it over and turns it upside down they will find a hammered snake on the back of the neuron. This is something even the wearer would have trouble seeing. The double brooch pin back uses a negative cut out to lighten the piece.
The dark patina-ed metals in the back layers of the brooch heighten the contrast between the polished nickel and the background. The variety of textures and techniques adds interest and variation.
